IT Marketing: Improving Postcard Response

One of the biggest mistakes that I see when people are doing postcard mailings is there's no urgency. What does that mean? That means that even if I'm interested in hiring you, there's no compelling reason to do so now. I will just file your card away with my other computer related stuff.

Now if I got that postcard and it said this company is offering a free system analysis to the first 25 people that respond in the greater Anytown area, then I may have more reason to respond. They might say, "You know, our computers are really screwed up. This free system analysis, it says there's no obligation, no purchase required or anything like that. I want to be one of the first 25. I'd better call them now."

IT Marketing: Limit Your Response One Way or Another

If you don't want to limit it to the number of people, limit it by date. The urgency and the scarcity can do absolute wonders. Talk to anyone who's serious about direct mail or online marketing. Urgency and scarcity are extremely powerful motivators. If you want someone to take action with the response that you can measure, you must give them a deadline on your IT marketing materials.

IT Marketing: Learn from the Experts

If you want help with designing direct response marketing, you need to talk to a direct response marketing expert. In most cases, it's going to be a copywriter or it's going to be someone that's retired from a big advertising company and specialized in direct response.

Just asking for general business advice from a business owner is not going to help you. The type of person that's ideal for generating strong responses is someone that comes from a mail order background, direct mail background, does a lot of online advertising, or has worked for an advertising agency that's done a lot of direct selling where there's measured response.

The Bottom Line about IT Marketing

The key things are urgency, scarcity, deadlines, compelling headlines, compelling points of pain and something that motivates them to take action now.

Customer Review: What DOESN'T GE do well???

General Electric...I don't know about the rest of you, but upon seeing who made this item I thought to myself 'Really? They make cellphone accessories now?'

Yep. They do. And they make them well.

But not only that, they perfected a concept I'd always been hoping somebody would - a bluetooth headset that allows you to simply swap out AAA batteries at will. Who wants to be talking on their bluetooth and suddenly the thing just dies on them in the middle of a conversation? Well...now you need to charge it until eternity. And, of course, the day finally comes when the piece of trash battery included with the headset only holds about 5 minutes of juice. Who wants that? With the AAA battery, it never wears out, it's not all that heavy, and you can replace it whenever you like in about 5-10 seconds. If you're really good you can do it one-handed while driving!

When I said GE perfected this concept, I was serious. The only other AAA-operated bluetooth headsets were both made by Motorola (there's one that runs on a AAAA battery, but I don't feel like spending $15 on a battery that's weaker than a AAA, nor do I feel like smashing open a bunch of 9V batteries to GET AAAA batteries). I own both of the Motorola versions, the H300 and the HS805. The H300 was their first attempt, and it's alright. I could run with it on, but it was incredibly quiet, the earpiece didn't insert into the ear, and it had a tendency to echo the other person's voice back to them. The HS805, the so-called 'upgraded version' of the H300, was simply a piece of junk. It had all the problems of the H300, plus it would fall off my ear if a gust of wind passed nearby. It had all of the problems of the H300 and no improvements whatsoever.

Enter General Electric. This bluetooth you're looking at right now - do you know how many of those problems it has? None. Zero. Zip. And using a long-life AAA battery, it has a MONTH of standby time. 30 DAYS. I hardly need to keep AAA batteries in my car with a life like that, but I do anyway. No echo, no discomfort, yesterday I ran 6 miles with it on and only needed to adjust it 3 times when it wiggled itself loose. It inserts into your ear so you can hear it extra well, and the earpiece is vertically adjustable to your ear's length. The earpiece also allows the weight of the device to be shared between your ear canal and the top of your ear. My ONLY complaint on this device is that it seems to have a difficult time filtering out wind. So outdoor use requires you to face a different direction and while driving you need to point your A/C vent away from your face. Not even a big enough deal to warrant 4 stars, in my book.

The best bluetooth on the market, IMHO, is less than $35. The choice is clear. Hope you all enjoyed this...

Customer Review: Easy to use, great looking output. This is a winner.

Ever since I switched to an operating system that doesn't hang, crash unexpectedly, or cause my peripherals to randomly stop working (Mac OS:X) my wife has hounded me to replace the one piece of the MicroSoft Office Suite that she used on a regular basis: Publisher.

With the advent of Printfolio I was finally able to do so for her. In fact, this OS:X native application not only works BETTER than Publisher ever did, but it is also natively intuitive. Publisher, because it was a third party software that was purchased by M$, had consistency problems. For example, context menus that were brought up by right clicking on objects were different than the rest of the Office Suite, and objects behaved differently than in other parts of the Suite as well.

Printfolio doesn't have these idiosyncrasies. In fact, within twenty minutes of taking it out of the box I had designed fantastic, professional-looking DOUBLE SIDED business cards using an imported photo, WITHOUT using a template (of which there are literally HUNDREDS to choose from.) It was so easy to use that I couldn't believe I was done so swiftly and went on to make my card look ridiculous because all of the tools are so easy to use. (Resist the temptation!)

So why only four stars? Well, the Printfolio comes with an extra CD-Rom which is 900MB of ClipArt. For some reason this would not install properly on my Powerbook. Installation would hang at 88% and then quit with an error message "Install Failed" and no other explanation.

So, the SOFTWARE seems to work admirably, but the EXTRAS failed. Since I purchased this specifically for the software and could care less about the ClipArt, this doesn't really affect me, but it might be a problem for you.

I strongly recommend this software for anyone looking to replace Publisher with the Macintosh.
